The Planetarium of Bogotá, venue for international meetings

On December 5, the XII Meeting of the Association of Planetariums of South America begins, an event that will bring together different audiences.

The Planetarium of Bogotá was selected to host the XII Meeting of the Association of Planetariums of South America – APAS, also achieving that Carlos Molina, leader of the astronomical stage of the Instituto Distrital de las Artes - Idartes, will remain as vice president in charge of the association. This is the first time Colombia, and even a country in northern South America, assumes this role of the organization consolidated in 2003.

“For Bogotá, being the venue for this meeting represents a fundamental moment to put itself on the map of the planetariums of our continent. We seek to promote the inclusion of new planetariums in the association to strengthen it, as well as our possibility of acquiring new knowledge and exchanging with others”, states Molina.

On December 5, this meeting will begin, which will have as its theme More than a dome: planetariums building communities around scientific, cultural, artistic and technological knowledge. For 4 days, all corners of the Planetarium will have activities such as work tables, talks, workshops, projections and a laboratory.

Astronomy enthusiasts, planetariums, observatories, academics and students from Colombia and Latin America will meet to discuss the way the daily life of planetariums has changed with the arrival of the pandemic. Ideas and experiences will be exchanged around how the creative capacity of these centers was promoted to reach the public with new content and programming.

Among the international guests at XII Meeting of APAS are: Milagros Varguez, director of Ka' Yok' - Planetarium of Cancun, Mexico; the director of the Planetarium of Madrid, Telmo Fernández; the Greek audiovisual producer Theofanis Matsopoulos; the director of the Planetário da Unipampa in Brazil, Guilherme Marranghello and Jessica Norberto, professor and researcher from Brazil.

During the meeting, the general public will be able to attend several activities, including a range of projections in full-dome format – the entire dome – of different guest productions from Latin America and Europe.

Among these will be Eclipse, a game of light and shadow and Energy in Balance, an infinite adventure of the Planetarium of Santiago de Chile, Colorful Universe of the Planetarium of Moscow, Spherium of the Planetarium of Madrid, Revealing the invisible universe of Theofanis Matsopoulos and Solarians of Juli Tagger, among others.

This will be done thanks to the support of the Department of International Relations of the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá and the Idartes International, a window to the world project.
